Apple’s OS X 10.8.1 release was the first update for the popular 10.8 Mountain Lion operating system.

Just as with most other operating system updates, OS X 10.8.1 fixed many of the most glaring bugs that plagued its predecessor. While Mountain Lion introduced some cutting-edge features to Apple fans, there were a few major security problems and usability issues. If you have decided to give Mountain Lion a try, then you might want to upgrade to 10.8.1 so that you can enjoy all of the features that this operating system has to offer.

One of the most important updates in OS X 10.8.1 is the overhaul of Migration Assistant. That utility app gives you the ability to quickly transfer files between all of your Apple products. With the release of OS X Mountain Lion, that app also allows you to create a full drive backup of your contacts, calendar, and email accounts. Unfortunately, Migration Assistant was very buggy in the 10.8 release, and many users experienced nonstop crashes. OS X 10.8.1 fixed those issues and improved the functionality of Migration Assistant.

The initial release of Mountain Lion also had some major problems with Apple’s Thunderbolt Display. When a computer was attached to a Thunderbolt Display, the audio would crackle or not work at all. Thunderbolt Display wasn’t optimized for 10.8, but that was fixed in 10.8.1. With the update, you should be able to use all Thunderbolt Displays.

As an added bonus, OS X 10.8.1 also patched dozens of security issues. Mountain Lion was a notoriously secure operating system, but some of the software that came bundled with that OS had glaring security holes. Once you update to 10.81.1, you can rest assured that your data is going to be much safer.

Mountain Lion was a groundbreaking operating system when it was first released, and the best way to enjoy that OS is to create a bootable disk with the 10.8.1 update. That release will let you explore the operating system without running into some of the bugs that affected OS X 10.8.

Pros

  • Fixed Migration Assistant bugs
